26th October to 3rd November 2019

Two weeks of exciting and varied activities in the Derwent Valley in Derbyshire. The World Heritage Site stretches from Matlock Bath down to Derby and in the course of the festival there will be events including from walks, lectures, entertainments, open houses, displays… a bit of everything from the most serious to the most fun involving thousands of people of all ages who come from all over the country.

Pete has been involved every year. These are his offerings this year.

CONCERT: TRAINS & BOATS &… SHANKS’S PONY

PETE CASTLE, KEITH KENDRICK, SYLVIA NEEDHAM

Traditional songs and stories about travel in all its forms: by road, rail and water but probably not air! (there are very few folk songs about aeroplanes.) There will almost definitely be coaches and carriages, cars and trains, horses and, of course, shanks’s pony— all drawn from the huge repository of songs and stories which make up the British folk tradition.

This annual concert by Pete, Keith and Sylvia has become a Discovery Days tradition which is always well supported and hugely enjoyed.

Upstairs at Wheatcroft’s Wharf Café (on the side of the Cromford Canal) at Cromford, DE4 3RQ

Friday 1st November 8.00—10.30pm

STORY WALK: LEAD & LIMESTONE

A walk with storytelling on the edge of Wirksworth and Cromford taking in the remains of two vital industries and the transport links which serviced them. Using that to inspire stories – not necessarily history, but legends and folk/fairy tales suggested by the venues but there will also be some historical fact and explanation.

It will only be about 2 miles but covers a huge range of landscape.

(It is aimed at adults although older children are welcome. No dogs please.)

Monday 28th October 11am til about 1pm (depending on how fast we walk!)

Starting from National Stone Centre car park, Porter Lane, Wirksworth, DE4 4LS
